Why New Regulation Means Laser Projection Is an Inevitable Trend?

In December 2020, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published a new safety standard IEC/EN/UL 62368-1 impacting many lamp-based projectors. The new standards classify lamp projectors by risk rating, and require that all cinema lamp projectors must now comply with the new safety regulations, globally. But what do these changes mean in practice for cinemas and projectors, and why is laser projection an inevitable trend?

1. New rules mean more regulations for lamp projectors

Like laser projectors, the majority of lamp projectors in cinema are Risk Group 3 (RG3), meaning that any new installation has to obey the new rules - with all the responsibilities that follow. The new rules are very specific and cover safety distances, hazard zones, and separation heights for lamp projectors. The standards mark cinemas' transition from traditional lamp projectors to laser projectors.

2. This ongoing renewal wave is an opportune time to adopt innovative laser technology

Historically, some exhibitors have preferred lamp projectors because they were subject to fewer regulations. But with IEC/EN/UL 62368-1, that's no longer true. In fact, there are major advantages to embracing innovation - especially if you're already considering redefining your business during this renewal wave for projectors (those operating for 10 or more years):

♦ Enhanced quality. Laser light source offer better quality than lamp alternatives. Providing the best image quality, with deep and rich colors, they're the perfect way to make a big and lasting impression on moviegoers as doors begin reopening - and keep them coming back again and again.

♦ More eco-friendly. Laser light source are more energy efficient and sustainable than lamp projectors which have a typical lamp life of only 1,100 hours. ALPD® laser light sources boost a life of 30,000 hours and can work properly for 7 to 8 years without replacement.

♦ Cost-effective. Laser delivers simpler operations and reduced maintenance needs - freeing up resources, particularly important coming out of an economic dip.

3. ALPD® drives laser adoption in the cinema industry

So far, there have been more than 31,000 movie theaters using ALPD® laser projection worldwide by the late July 2022. Based on the advanced technologies and high projection quality, ALPD® will continue to leverage disruptive innovations and drive laser adoption in cinemas.

About ALPD®

ALPD® means Advanced Laser Phosphor Display which refers to the replacement of the original xenon light sources of projectors by ALPD® laser light sources to help cinemas improve brightness, save energy, increase efficiency, and prolong lifetime.
