Germany's FORUM Offenburg Tackles Rising Electricity Costs with ALPD® Laser Solution

With the increase of energy cost, many European countries are confronted with escalating electricity costs. This has prompted many businesses, including cinemas, to shift their focus onto reducing power consumption and cutting electricity expenses in an effort to optimize operational costs.

Built in 2008, the FORUM Offenburg in Germany is a renowned cinema with eight screens and over 1,000 seats. In 2023, the cinema experimented with an ALPD® laser projection solution in one of its auditoriums, replacing the original xenon light source of the NEC NC2000 digital projector with an ALPD® X20-N2000 laser light source. This marked the first introduction of the ALPD® solution, increasing the number of auditoriums with laser projection in the cinema to three.

When asked about the reason for this upgrade, Erik Weihrauch, the cinema's Technical Director, stated, "Our primary goal was to save on electricity and maintenance costs. As is known to all, Germany and the rest of Europe are currently struggling with the challenge of rising electricity costs. As our electricity bills continuously doubled, we finally decided to make our equipment more energy-efficient. So, at the beginning of this year, we introduced a laser projection solution from China for the first time. The results have shown that among the three laser halls we currently have, the ALPD® solution is the most energy-efficient."

The X20-N2000 laser light source boasts a high brightness of 20,000 lumens, as well as exceptional contrast and color. Erik Weihrauch further noted, "The upgraded picture quality is unparalleled. The effect is truly remarkable, particularly when screening 3D movies. Moreover, the light source decays very slowly, which means that no replacements will be needed in the next 7-8 years. The solution completely eliminates issues of dim brightness and flickering caused by the aging of xenon lamp bulbs, further reducing our maintenance costs."

Regarding the retrofit, Erik Weihrauch stated, "There's a saying in Germany, 'no complaints equals the best feedback'. We've asked some viewers on their feelings about the ALPD® Laser Hall. They all expressed that the brightness, picture details, and overall immersion have significantly improved, providing a refreshing viewing experience. This upgrade not only reduces power consumption but also creates a new selling point for us. In the future, we will consider further application of this solution."
